Since anime is completely subjective, this is just what anime that I think are highly praised by a lot of people, but isn't actually that good. Sorry if one your favorites is on here, but anyways...
3. Sword Art Online
When I first heard the synopsis of SAO, I was extremely excited to begin watching it, and it started out as a good anime with a very original and cool idea for an anime. Since I like RPGs, this was like heaven to me. If only the second half had been as good as the first half.... Most of the original cast is set aside except for Kirito, so all the time developing them felt completely wasted. The random as hell incest thrown in just adds to my dislike of the second half. Kirito is also one of the most bland boring main characters I've ever watched. He has no personality at all, and he's a master at almost everything he does, and no reason is given why. Wasted potential is my main gripe with SAO though
2. Angel Beats
Angel beats is what I would call the perfect definition of a rushed anime. I feel if the studio making Angel Beats could have made it into a 24 episode anime, it would have been much better and more fleshed out. Sadly that's not the case. I also don't know why they added 3 episodes of filler when it was already such a short series. Back to the rushed part; The plot is very slow paced until about the last 2 episodes, then immediately starts going fast, leaving unanswered questions and loose ends galore. Add in the fact that all the characters are walking and talking heavily used stereotypes, and you end up with Angel Beats.
1. Naruto
One of the most popular ongoing manga/anime series, Naruto has been a huge success here in America as well. Despite that, I still think it's a quite overrated anime. Let's start with the absurd amount of filler episodes. I'm completely fine with some filler, just as long as it doesn't get to a point where it's been 5...6... even 7 episodes of straight filler that add nothing to the story. Another problem is the also absurd amount of flashbacks. They add a flashback from 3 episodes ago, that clearly isn't needed, and the FLASHBACK takes up the whole episode that I'm watching. Frustrating. The constant talking during the epic fight scenes also detracts from the show, as unnecessary talking that last half the show really ruins the fight. Overall a pretty mediocre anime that I dropped after finally losing hope that it would get better.
You shouldn't call Angel Beats , I agree that it has a slow pace but it tells a message and makes you think about life.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on that. It just could have been so much better I think, and was disappointed when it was over. :/
DeleteI'd almost agree on this post when I first saw SAO. But seeing Angel Beats and Naruto...
ReplyDeleteFirst, Angel Beats. For me, I can set aside those flaws. I'd still call it a recommendable even if the flaws were that. Because more than the storyline and the stereotypes, I could say I'd seen farther than that. Those stereotypes contributed in the comedy part, and oh, if you were really scrutinizing it in the most otaku way you'd find the voice acting, animation and the drama good.
Second, Naruto. Though I've grown tired of it (because before, it's the only anime I was watching by the time I wasn't a full-fledged otaku yet... and for now it's in my on-hold list), I'd still defend those filler because if you take it literally, it's definitely a filler, because they let the manga catch up first. Remember that it's the manga that had an anime adaptation, not an anime that had a manga adaptation. And the main reason why I put it on-hold for watching is because it's my most favorite anime, as a shounen (boy in teens) myself, of course I can relate to the main character even he's that dumb, and of course the reason I put it on-hold is because I was rewatching the Naruto (not Shippuuden. And note: dupble-p, double-u. Grammar Nazi even in Japanese) and being in the season 10 before I stopped... I'd like to say there were lots of events in the fillers (and some flashbacks) that NEVER been actually shown yet. You'd actually realize more if you watch those fillers and flashbacks, so please don't underestimate those.
It was okay if it was SAO. But you actually listed here my first three animes I watched in Japanese dub (they have it televised in the Philippines in Filipino dub which sucks like English dub... of course, both are dubbed for the sole purpose of the comfort of understanding the episode without the subs, not more, no less... with the quality compromised). I must say it was actually Angel Beats and SAO that pushed me away from Naruto and pulled me to the realm of anime. It's because of those two that I tried animes other than Naruto. Sorry for talking like this for long though, but I'd just present my opinion.
Oh, just a clarification. I was watching the not-Shippuuden Naruto and rewatching the entire Shippuuden from the start. The purpose is to get to know more of the series and for me to be able to be proud of myself that I was able to watch it all and understand. Sorry though, because I thoroughly criticize animes and mangas.
Delete1. I thought the animation and voice acting were great! When I say overrated, I don't mean it was terrible, I mean it was good but not as good (my opinion) as most people would say it was. Also, overused stereotypes are a negative in my opinion, but that's just me :P
Delete2. I know that filler is there so the manga can catch up as well, but that doesn't matter, the filler is still there, and I still dislike is regardless.
3. I'm happy that you took the time to read what I wrote and write your opinion! Thank you :). I also agree that anime like SAO and Angel Beats help people get people more into anime, and I'm glad they exist, because the more anime fans, the better!
You're welcome! I would take the rest to be your opinion, and I respect that. But I couldn't really get why would you hate filler episodes when it would be better than a hiatus. If this doesn't change your mind, though, then I guess I'd leave your opinion as it is. But for this article good job! :D
DeleteI almost completely agree with this list. Both SAO and Naruto are over-hyped when they're kind of bad shows. As for Angel Beats, I agree with you for the most part, but I do think the pacing can be easily forgiven for the message and power that the show delivers. That being said, it doesn't really make up for all the gigantic plot holes the shows leaves, which I feel could have been explained or fixed with a few more episodes. So while I think Angel Beats is a good show, most people think it's a lot better than it actually is. (Though, to each their own.)
ReplyDeleteThank you for reading! And yes, I feel like if Angel Beats had been 24 episodes, it could have been really, really good. But sadly it's not :/
Deleteto me Angel Beats is far from overrated it's a really good show but as for Naruto & SAO I gotta agree that it is overrated. People be claiming that Naruto is the greatest anime ever & comparing it with legends like cowboy bebop & nge lmfao. smh these anime noobs
ReplyDeleteRight? Hahaha. Thanks for reading!
DeleteAlright, having read this, I think I can give my own opinions accurately.
ReplyDeleteSAO: I have to agree for the most part with this anime. One of the things that bothered me about SAO was exactly what you mentioned. The first half was really good, where a number of characters were fleshed out and we get to learn a good deal about them, and then all of that is pretty much dropped in the second half, where it seems to focus on Kirito's cousin(?) and her intense sexual desires for Kirito, which is never really explained, though it could just be a Japanese thing. Incest seems to be a popular theme in anime. OreImo and KissxSis anyone?
As for Kirito, well, he's your textbook definition of a Gary-Stu, so sickeningly perfect that they actually had to come up with a new name for his perfection otherwise known as Kirito-Stu. One thing that should be known about Kirito is that the reason he's so flat is because he's what people call a guilty pleasure character. You're not watching SAO because you want to see more of him. He's more like a placeholder for teenagers who wish they could be that perfect to imagine themselves in his place. I like to call him the Bella Swan of Shonen anime.
Angel Beats: Now, while I agree with you that this anime would have been loads better if they had 24 episodes instead of 12, I don't quite agree that it's overrated. It is true that a lot of the characters feel like stereotypes, but they were made like that in order to add comedy to the story. While it would have been nice if all of them were more fleshed out, I don't think it's necessarily something that detracts from the overall story, and some of the characters like Kanade, Yuri, Hinata, Otonashi, Iwasawa and Yui were all decently fleshed out, even if Iwasawa didn't get much screen time before leaving the stage, as it were. The others were mostly background characters meant to add color and comedy, so them not being very well-created characters can be excused. Overall, I'd have to say I'm halfway with you here, but not fully on board.
Naruto: Oh my god! Thank you! Seriously, I used to think I was alone in thinking this anime had way too many sucky filler episodes. Honestly, my biggest beef with Naruto, aside from the way they always describe their jutsu in the middle of a fight, is that nearly 50% of this anime is ALL FILLER. I don't mind one or two episodes of filler, and I'll admit that sometimes they can add a lot to the development of certain background characters, but for 100+ episodes to be nothing but filler? That's just annoying. I had to stop watching this anime and wait until it was finished before going back and skipping all of the filler episodes because of how pointless they were. I completely agree with you on this anime. Awesome concept. Overrated anime. The manga is better anyway.
